Studies have been done on a group of 22 people with high cholesterol. Half the group were administered Policosanol and the other half given placebo capsules. After two years of taking 10mg daily, the patients with Policosanol had a marked decrease of 18% in total cholesterol and 25% decrease in LDL. In addition, they showed an increase of 21% of HDL. This has encouraged the use of Policosanol as an alternative to commercially sold prescription drugs.

Processed meat consumption is surging as Americans gobble up hot dogs, sausage and cold cuts in record numbers. Eat BIG to Get BIG!

The title says it all. In this article I am going to share with you a short story about how I came to learn the truth about getting big, gaining weight and building muscle. It is something that is so often misunderstood and underestimated by most beginners, especially those hardgainers who find it particularly difficult to gain weight.

It all started from a very early age for me. I was a young boy and both my parents were into Bodybuilding in the early 80′s and I was taken to gyms when they trained and was constantly surrounded by these big muscular men, and woman, who to me were absolute giants. My Dad, who was by no means one of the biggest guys at only 5 ft 10 inches, I still acknowledged and was in awe at his muscular chest, his large back and his big biceps. I cam to appreciate and love the look of these “bodybuilders” and automatically believed that I to would one day look that way too.

I was 12 when I bought my first set of dumbbells to use at home in my bedroom. I joint my first gym at 14 and was in a regular routine by 16. In the beginning I obviously didn’t know much about what I was doing but my parents helped me out and showed me some basics. Then I started to read, study and learn about different training systems, exercises and strategies for building muscle. I saw some muscular definition but of course I was very young and didn’t really grow very much. I didn’t know anything about genetics at the time of course and I was convinced that in just a very short time I was going to look like Arnold or stallone.

I had the burning desire and would workout out with an insane intensity and a real hunger for a body like those I had seen and looked up to growing up. At about age 17 I was exercising all the time but had become extremely health conscious. I was determined to never be fat and to always be as lean as possible, however I still had the desire to grow and to become big. I was eating very healthily but not very much as all. Fruit, vegetables and salads with very small portions of chicken or fish. I became very skinny and frail and looked quite unwell, but I was obsessed with not getting fat.

My mum would tell me that if I wanted to grow and to build muscle then I would have to eat. “What do you know” would be my arrogant youthful response thinking that I knew best and had it already figured out. The after about a year of obsessive eating I became frustrated and dissatisfied as I was looking nothing like the bodybuilders that I aspired to be like. This dissatisfaction and frustration drove me to give in and try something new and so I gradually started to eat more. And you know what my body responded…

I couldn’t believe it, I saw my body respond and change in a very short period of time. I guess al that intense training and lifting my body, my muscles, were just crying out for more calories. So I ate a bit more and you know what I saw even more results. This was exciting! I was hooked, I started experimenting and eating more food, more complex carbs, more proteins, more healthy fats and in one year I gained so much weight and build so much muscle by the time I was 19 I was seen as a natural bodybuilder, I mean it was obvious that I worked out, you could see the results.

I knew the basics of training as I had been studying and practicing for years, I knew the basic principles of healthy eating so I knew what to eat and knew about what nutrients did what in the body but I had just been underestimating the amount, the quantity, that I needed to eat and consume in order to gain weight and build muscle, especially as a natural ectomorph hardgainer.

I have found the missing link, you must EAT BIG to GET BIG! And know the results came, I remember when I ordered my first tub of protein powder on the internet and started to experiment and research different supplements to expand my knowledge and my results even further. After that at age 19 I become a certified Personal Trainer and the rest his history.

I tell you this story because I really feel from my experience that there are as many people out there who are struggling to gain weight and who find it very difficult to put weight on and build muscle as there are those who find it difficult to lose weight. Just as you must create a calorie deficit, a negative calorie balance to lose weight, so must you create a calorie surplus, a positive calorie balance to gain weight, it’s that simple. You must also consider the macronutrients like enough quality lean protein, enough clean complex carbohydrates and healthy essential fats but put simply if you are not gaining weight and building muscle and your training is to scratch it is the simple reason, you are not eating enough!
