No one likes being hungover. While many people have their own tried and true way to cure a hangover once one has already occurred, I prefer to prevent one from ever happening in the first place. It takes discipline, and we all know drinking and discipline don’t go together, but the results are worth it. Follow these tips and you will wake up feeling much better than you should.

Eat before going out. If you are going to a bar or party, make sure you get a good, solid meal in your system before you start drinking. There is nothing worse than drinking on an empty stomach and you want something safe and unoffensive in your stomach to aid with digestion. I recommend something starchy and light like pasta. Avoid Mexican and Indian food as these cuisines can irritate your stomach lining.

Drink water. I know a lot of people like to take this to the extreme and mix in a glass of water after every alcoholic beverage. If you are really concerned about the next morning, do it. But I have found that mixing in one or two glasses over the course of the night can prevent against the awful diuretic effect of drinking too much. Use your best judgement.

Avoid liquor. If you can stick with drinking beer, do it. At the very least, stay away from darker liquors like whiskey and tequila as these will give you worse hangovers in the morning. Same with red wine. If you are going to drink liquor, I recommend vodka or gin. And pace yourself.

Vitamins. Take a multi-vitamin before bed to replenish what your body lost thanks to alcohol being in your system. This is a no-brainer.

Sleep. No matter what you do, try to get at least 6 hours of sleep after drinking. If you don’t get enough sleep, you will feel bad the next morning, so schedule accordingly.

Follow these tips and you should be able to drink socially and still make it into the office the next morning. Preventing a hangover takes work but you will be thanking yourself when you wake up. Cheers!
