Is Bottled Water Safe?
Consumers across the world choose bottled water as an alternative to other sources because they think it is safer. People use bottled water extensively while traveling, mostly because it is convenient. We have become a generation that despises the simple tap water from the water fountains. We are more impressed with the flashy ads of the pristine water shown in the bottled water commercial which says it has added minerals! But do we really need that? The human body is made of around 60-70% of water and so is our planet. This is nature’s way of showing the importance of water in its pure form. So stop before you buy another bottle of water and just reflect on its consequences.
The process involved in purifying water before bottling includes violating its pure form by harsh chemical treatments. Many brands of bottled water across the globe have been found with traces of cancer-causing byproducts of chlorination, industrial solvents and fertilizer residue. So you can draw a few tentative conclusions that bottled water is no safer than tap water. Besides, if you notice, mostly the bottled water comes in plastic bottles. Why? Is it because it’s handy? Well it maybe, but this could be handy enough to lead traces of toxic substance into your body. The PET bottles have been long under scrutiny for being potentially carcinogenic. Reusing such bottles or drinking standing water from them kept under warmer temperatures should be avoided.
Environmentalists across the globe are worried sick of the hazard being caused by the bottled water industry. Firstly selling something in non-biodegradable containers should be banned on the whole. The difference in the amount of plastic used for such purposes and the amount that is recycled in the end is striking. There is no use in going in the incomprehensible figures. The point to ponder is that the non-recycled water bottles are adding to the plastic dump on our planet which can’t be depleted.
Recently the town of Bundanoon, Australia became the world’s first place to ban bottled water. We should applaud this action taken by them. The beverage industry heads are like a mafia who convince you to go against nature, ignore the ill-effects on our body and still burn a hole in our pocket for doing so.
Your body just asks for simple water, not the one with added minerals. If you don’t trust your local tap water, use carbon filters to purify it. If possible carry it in your thermos flasks with you whenever you travel. This would be healthier, environmentally sustainable and more ecological than bottled water. This may sound tasking but at least it would not jeopardize your health or the well being of your planet. If we take the step now we can change the way the world looks on this issue and give our coming generations a better place to live in.
